Have You Ever Burned Rice Down To The Pot?

Burnt Rice

Burn Rice is how this whole thing started.

The rice that inspired this blog
In all honesty, it was more than burnt rice.

It was 5:00 and I was in the middle of moving through that work - to homework - to start dinner phase. As I was helping with homework, I started the rice for dinner, and decided I could take a minute to run upstairs and check for an important work email.

I was trying to do three things at once.
You know how it ends.

Put down the pencil before you pick up the pen (or spatula)

As a work-at-home parent I find the transition periods of my day to be the most difficult. I move into the next phase of the day without completely shutting down from a previous phase. For me, this never ends well: a child is frustrated with me because I have yet to come back and help, I start something for work and forget where I left off, or I burn dinner.

Home Office Hustle

Those of us who spend most of the day at home moving from home manager, to parent, to work phase are doing what I call the Home Office Hustle. Most days my dance is like a frenzied stomp dance. The goal of this site is to work out ways to turn that dance into an elegant, gracefully flowing ballet.

Grab a Partner and Let’s Do-si-Do

I cannot do it alone. I will be here to lead the discussion, bring up my newest challenge, interview some people who are doing it well (at least better than me), and hopefully together, we can find some solutions. If nothing else, remind me to set the alarm on my iPhone so I know when it’s time to turn the rice down to a simmer.
